Session Type: Oral

This session is concerned with the everyday articulation of `Othering’. The categorization of ‘others’ by devaluing, belittling or hurting ‘others’ and as a means to elevate oneself is an integral part of everyday conversations. Over recent years, social movements like ‘Black Lives Matter`, ‘All Lives Matter’, ‘Say their Names’ have not only fought against racial profiling, police violence, and epistemic racism; they also aim for linguistic changes as

  1. a) a way of resisting common discriminatory categorizations and exclusions;
  2. b) a way to resist old and invent new self-designations;

c.) a challenge to everyday racism, its effects and impacts.

We invite papers which deal with these processes of rejection and renewal; with the impact of the newly emerging categories; and the linguistic fight for appropriate categorizations.
