Reactionary movements are not new, but in recent years they have gained visibility and even increasing influence in several countries. This panel welcomes papers that explores these movements in terms of: the explicit and implicit notions of communities they employ; what these tell us about evolving understandings of what is rural/urban and rural/urban identities; how and in what ways have they evolved over the last few decades in terms of main actors and repertoires; what are the contexts in which they operate; to what extent they are able to shape future; and what is their relationship to global dynamics. All methodologies, theoretical orientations, and areas of attention (in the Global North and/or Global South) are welcome. Papers that employ comparative theoretical frameworks and/or methodologies are especially encouraged.
