Language: English

Session Type: Oral

This session aims to deepen the mutual understanding of similarities and dissimilarities in education, society, and culture among East Asian countries and regions that share a history of substantial human exchange and common practices resulting from such exchanges. The spread of the modern Western model of education has become a worldwide phenomenon; however, the manner in which it has developed within the context of each country or region is by no means uniform. The analysis of East Asian education has often remained "stereotypical" and has not been adequately organized, neither systematically nor critically. We welcome research that explores the East Asian context thoughtfully, taking advantage of the fact that the upcoming World Congress will be held in Melbourne, which is closer to East Asia than to other regions. We welcome analyses that use historical methods to shed light on the historical context and comparative methods to highlight the differences in the context of the societies of each country to articulate the East Asian perspective. We also welcome in-depth analyses that focus on the case of a single East Asian country to contribute to the discussions in the session.
