The 2nd half of the 20th century saw rising passions for democracy world over. However, 21st century began with the rising authoritarianism. The enemies of liberal democracy are accelerating their attacks as this self-government tries to protect human rights of every individual entitling them to equal treatment under law. Authoritarian regimes are becoming more effective at invading the institutions that support basic liberty. Countries with long-established democracies have exploited the shortcomings of their systems, distorting national politics to promote hatred, violence, and unbridled power. The countries with authoritarian regimes like China, Russia, and others have gained enormous power in the international system, and relatively free countries have seen their established norms being challenged and fractured. Countries which struggled in the space available between democracy and authoritarianism are gradually leaning toward the latter. It has been argued that if democracy’s defenders do not work together to help guarantee freedom for all people, the authoritarian model will prevail. Democratic governments will have to strengthen domestic laws and institutions while taking bold, coordinated steps and actions to support the struggle for democracy around the world.
