Addressing population change through social, health and other public policies

We invite submissions examining any social, health, or other population policy, broadly defined as seeking to accommodate, manage, modify, or to otherwise directly or indirectly influence any aspect of demographic change. Papers may discuss any stage of the policymaking process and its broader socio-demographic, socio-cultural, socio-economic or socio-political dimensions (which need not concentrate on the conference themes of authoritarianism and its new entanglements). Suggested topics may include, for example, policies to:

  • accelerate fertility decline or boost fertility;
  • affect reproductive health, childbearing or childrearing;
  • influence marriage or cohabitation patterns;
  • improve health quality of life, and well-being for specific population groups;
  • reduce disease or morbidity among vulnerable communities
  • manage migration flows and their consequences
  • develop strategies for coping with shifts in urban/rural demographic or health trends
  • address population ageing, changing population age structures, or intergenerational transfers.

Papers could also evaluate policy changes regarding issues such as sexuality or the enumeration of sexual minorities or sexual identity, or examine policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, pandemic-induced changes or future preparedness activities. Contributions may refer to any geographical setting. A wide-range of empirical papers, case studies and comparative analyses, including attempts to learn from successful or flawed policies, and to transfer lessons and experiences elsewhere, are encouraged.
