The latest commodity price boom (2000–2013) has shaped Latin America in important ways. Mining and other extractive industries have caused severe environmental, social, cultural and economic damages and triggered serious social conflicts. As a result, resistance against extractive projects has emerged all over the region. This session aims at discussing various forms of resistance against extractivism (mining, oil, gas, food, tourism,) in Latin America and their role in shaping the region´s future. In this session we aim to rethink extractivism in a broad sense covering not only the traditional sectors (mining, oil, gas, agriculture) but other sectors as well (tourism, construction). The session will focus on how social movements, community-based struggles and non-governmental organizations are defying extractivism and in so doing are introducing a transformative perspective on the processes of production and reproduction of capital all over the region. Papers focusing on single case studies as well as comparative studies are welcome. Papers that elaborate on the local-regional-nation-global link are appreciated.
