It is often argued that empowerment is both a process of external and internal change, a power within to enhance capabilities and to mobilize women. Thus, empowerment is a process of building capacity for greater participation of women in decision-making processes that allow for transformative action. This session seeks to delineate different shades and aspects of women’s empowerment in India and abroad, or the processes that help women assert control over factors that affect their lives. When we consider the areas of income, employment, and education in broad terms, women’s empowerment must be enhanced. We will consider how to identify limitations to women’s empowerment, as well as how state and social policies can help to realize it. Entrepreneurship is one key element that this session will consider.
