In recent years, there have been several debates about the society of risk and uncertainty and the role of politics and science in it. Several approaches have discussed the future and the visions of future constructed by the media and the players in science and technology. Nowadays, catastrophes have acquired greater prominence in the individual and collective experience of life and the future. This proposal brings together analyses that revolve around people's visions of the future marked by the pandemic crisis, new virus threats and the spectre of a world war. From their areas of research, it aims to discuss the challenges to social theory brought about by these visions of future horizons which accommodate and allow the conceptualisation of new stages of experience of risk and uncertainty, in the light of complex realities, marked by the daily experience of nuclear, biological and chemical wars. Besides the challenges to Sociology, the meeting also discusses the challenges to Law, namely through the anticipation of crimes and methods of prevention and/or control. The role of technology and science in that visions of the future will also be discussed, having into considerations the diversity of cultural and social contexts.
