In 2021, Leslie Solomonian and Erica Di Ruggiero argued that the global crises of ecological degradation and social injustice are mutually reinforcing products of the same flawed sociocultural system. It is clear now that social movements are morally and politically obliged to challenge, analyse, and reconstruct these sociocultural systems in order to mitigate future planetary harm. This requires a critical examination of the values and narratives which underlie sociocultural systems of oppression, inequality and power; and how different social movements, citizens, and grassroots communities are approaching the current ecological crisis. Therefore, this session will focus on presenting different theoretical and methodological perspectives and angles in order to comprehend holistically the relationship between social movements, the environment and expressions and claims for social justice.
