Art and Music have long been recognized as crucial elements of social movements in general and labor movements in particular. From Joe Hill, Aunt Molly Jackson and El Teatro Campesino in the United States to Victor Jara and La Nueva Cancion in Latin America, Jacek Kaczmarski from Solidarity in Poland to the group Tambisan sa Sining in the Philippines, songs of solidarity and visions celebrating struggle play vital functions in organizing, educating, and mobilizing people to fight for better working conditions and social justice. This session will present scholars and activists whose work investigates how art and music is being created as part of these international struggles for justice.
