RC04 Sociology of Education (host committee)

Language: English and French

Session Type: Oral

The paradigm of lifelong learning has become a central pillar of contemporary education and training policies and sustainable development strategies. From a sociological perspective, rapid technological change, demographic shifts, labor market transformations, and growing social inequalities require individuals and communities to continuously acquire new knowledge, skills, and competencies throughout their lives.

The objective of this session is to explore the multiple dimensions of lifelong learning from an international and comparative perspective. We welcome contributions on adult education, continuing professional development, literacy and post-literacy programs, community learning initiatives, digital learning environments, higher education, and learning opportunities for vulnerable populations.

The focus will be on the role of lifelong learning in promoting social inclusion, active citizenship, employability, gender equality, and sustainable development. With this in mind, our session aims to examine the challenges faced by education systems, universities, governments, civil society organizations, and local communities in implementing effective lifelong learning policies and practices.

Contributions may address theoretical approaches, empirical research, comparative studies, policy analyses, innovative practices, and experiences from different regions of the world. Particular attention will be given to comparative perspectives between successful international experiences and analyses of contexts in Africa, the Arab region, Latin America, and other Southern contexts.

The aim of this session is to foster interdisciplinary dialogue among researchers, professionals, and policymakers seeking to understand how lifelong learning can contribute to the emergence of more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable societies.
