RC22 Sociology of Religion (host committee)
Language: English
Session Type: Oral
This session invites contributions exploring the multifaceted crisis of democratic systems in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, with particular attention to the evolving role of churches and religious institutions. The pandemic intensified existing tensions—declining trust in institutions, political polarization, and challenges to social cohesion—while simultaneously opening new spaces for civic and moral engagement.
We welcome theoretical and empirical papers that address how churches respond to democratic backsliding and social inequalities. Possible topics include: churches as agents of solidarity or division; religious narratives and political legitimacy; digital religion and public discourse; faith-based social services in times of crisis; and interreligious or ecumenical responses to democratic challenges.

By bringing together scholars of sociology, political science, and religious studies, this session aims to deepen our understanding of how religious actors shape—and are shaped by—the ongoing transformation of democratic life.
Submissions are welcome from both early-career and established researchers.
