RC25 Language and Society (host committee)

Language: English, French and Spanish

Session Type: Oral

Language occupies a central position across the social sciences. Sociology, pedagogy, psychology, and related disciplines all engage with language as a key medium through which individuals interpret the world, construct identities, negotiate relationships, and participate in social life. At the same time, each discipline approaches language through distinct theoretical frameworks, methodological traditions, and research agendas.

This session explores commonalities and differences in the study of language across disciplines. It invites contributions that examine how language functions as a bridge between fields of inquiry while also revealing disciplinary boundaries and assumptions. Particular attention will be given to the power of language not only to describe social reality but also to shape practices, interactions, institutions, and forms of knowledge. Language plays an active role in processes of socialization, learning, identity formation, inclusion and exclusion, and the reproduction or transformation of social relations.
The session welcomes theoretical, methodological, and empirical contributions.
By bringing together scholars from different fields, the session aims to foster dialogue on the possibilities and limits of interdisciplinary approaches to language and to reflect on language as both an object of study and a constitutive force in social life, highlighting its role in shaping responses to the uncertainties, conflicts, and transformations in turbulent times.
The session is multilingual although the English is the main language of the session and the conference, therefore the abstracts and presentation titles should be prepared in English language. Also the presentation slides should be prepared in English, or at least should contain translation notes.
