Abstract Submissions Closed

RC39 Sociology of Disasters (host committee)

Language: English

Session Type: Oral

There has been considerable rhetoric related to enhancing social equity in disaster and emergency management policy, practice and training; however, there are limited examples of how equity is being pursued or achieved. This panel will highlight how social equity in disaster and emergency management can and is being pursued in various contexts throughout the world. Because social equity is conceptualized in different ways depending on the context, presenters will operationalize what social equity is in relation to their geographical/cultural context and then provide examples of how it is being pursued. Successes and challenges will be presented based on theoretical, empirical and applied research as a means of taking lessons learned in various contexts and attempting to apply them in other locales.

As such, presentations can focus on curriculum/pedagogical innovations in academic and/or practitioner training, policy initiatives, public policy development, organizational dynamics that induce social equity, applied practices, etc.
