RC34 Sociology of Youth (host committee)

Language: English and French

Session Type: Oral

Today, the world is witnessing escalating geopolitical conflicts and humanitarian crises that threaten the very stability of societies. In these turbulent times, youth are often viewed either as passive victims of war or as perpetrators of violence. This perspective completely overlooks their potential as genuine peacebuilders and catalysts for intercultural dialogue.

This panel discussion aims to highlight the role of young people not merely as passive recipients of peace treaties, but as innovators of new mechanisms for cultural exchange. Today's youth possess digital tools and cross-border virtual spaces that enable them to dismantle stereotypes, counter hate speech, and build bridges of understanding even in the darkest hours of conflict. The session will explore how youth can transform cultural diversity from a "point of collision" into a "common ground" for sustainable peace.

Key Discussion Axes

1: Cultural Challenges in Times of War: How do armed conflicts shape young people’s perceptions of "the Other"? How can we counter hate propaganda and the polarization of societies?

2: Youth Digital Diplomacy: The role of technology, social media networks, and digital art in fostering intercultural dialogue and transcending closed geopolitical boundaries.

3: From Relief to Peacebuilding: Success stories of youth-led initiatives that have facilitated bilateral or multilateral dialogues between communities in conflict, and their role in transitional justice and reconciliation.

4: Empowerment and Recommendations: How can international organizations and governments support and institutionalize youth cultural initiatives, ensuring their meaningful inclusion at official negotiation tables?
