International migration is accelerating and becoming increasingly globalised continuously. Then, since the turn of the twenty-first century, immigration has been recognised as a security issue that could pose a serious threat to the state and the society. Extreme right-wing populist parties and groups are fuelling public antipathy through social media and street demonstrations. The state and other societal agencies are struggling to control immigration and integrate immigrant stayers in order to alleviate public dissatisfaction and fear. In flow, the state is trying to build walls on the national border, strengthen visa requirements, and makes campaign to crack down on irregular immigrants with harsh means. In stock, it is becoming common practice to introduce classes and examinations in the host languages and knowledge of host countries, as well as an oath of allegience to the host country when granting of permanent residence as well as naturalisation.
In these situations, what kind of policies are the state and other agencies adopting to tackle these issues recently? Do such policies benefit the state, the society, and besides immigrants themselves? It is hoped that this session will serve as a forum for presenting the new immigration policies and social integration policies adopted by various countries, and for discussing desirable policies for the near future.
