Diverse Food Economies for Asia: Exploring the "More-Than-Capitalist" Food Systems

Abstract Submissions Closed

RC40 Sociology of Agriculture and Food (host committee)

Language: English

Session Type: Oral

There is growing interest in the importance of diverse economies to explore, and strengthen the "more-than-capitalist" food systems that exist all around us. Through their exploration, we are interested in better understanding their potential to pose alternative imaginaries and praxis to transform our food system. We argue that an improved understanding of the dynamic histories and practices of diverse food economies shed light on the ways to strengthen the resilience of food systems while promoting social and ecological wellbeing. To do this, we explore actual case studies of diverse economic systems throughout (but not limited to) Asia, which may include food commons / commoning, social (and) solidarity economies; economies of care, or alternative food networks or practices, described in the diverse economies framework as what is in the iceberg, below the waterline.

We would like to discuss how to better understand their dynamics, how to better assess them, and how we can better learn from them.
