Given the importance of migrants in organizational life and the impact of organizations on the mobility of people, the purpose of this session is to foster fruitful exchanges between organizational and migration scholars. There have been recent calls by organizational scholars to pay more attention to migration, as well as calls from migration scholars to study the role of organizations in influencing migrant flows, integration, and experience. Yet, fruitful conversations are often hampered by different theoretical vocabularies and frameworks, methodological norms, and orienting questions. This session seeks to bridge different theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches, generating innovative questions to ask and enrich both scholarly communities. How do organizations recruit, manage, and control migrant workforces? How do different types of organizations collaborate and compete in managing the demand of migrants? How does the migration of people influence organizational performance, productivity, culture, and norms? How do organizations and their networks evolve as people migrate across them?By showcasing studies that speak to these questions and beyond, we aim to develop a deeper understanding of organization and migration as mutually embedded and interdependent: organizations as both shaping and influenced by migration; and migrants as both constrained by and navigating organizational forces.
