RC11 Sociology of Aging (host committee)
Language: English
Session Type: Oral
Session description: Gerontology and the sociology of ageing have largely developed within Eurocentric and androcentric frameworks. In dialogue with the Congress theme's call for a more inclusive, globally dialogical sociology, this session invites contributions that draw on non-Western, decolonial, subaltern, and post-Western perspectives to rethink core concepts of ageing, care, and later life. Comparative and Global South-centred empirical work is especially welcome.
Possible topics: indigenous and non-Western conceptions of old age; critiques of "successful/active ageing" paradigms from the Global South; colonial legacies in eldercare institutions; methodological decolonization in ageing research.
