Language: English and Spanish

Session Type: Oral

The objective of this session is to encourage discourse and continued dialogue among sociologists, anthropologists and historians concerning the resistance, agency and anti-colonial experiences of enslaved and freed people in the Americas during the 18th and 19th centuries. The primary objective of the session is to promote further reflection on social dynamics in the context of slavery, abolition and post-abolition in the Americas, with a particular focus on the role of blacks and mestizos. The objective of this session is to illuminate the histories, narratives and experiences of individuals, groups and communities who have fought for their freedom and alternative ways of living. The overarching objective is to encourage the utilisation of alternative sources, where innovative approaches have the potential to lead to the development of analyses capable of linking local and global sociohistorical aspects. Consequently, a secondary objective is the identification of novel approaches and epistemologies for the analysis of both historical and contemporary sources.
