RC37 Sociology of Arts (host committee)

Language: English

Session Type: Roundtable

Creative works are broadly defined with reference to the qualities of novel aesthetic and expressive knowledge, which may be a synthesis of other forms of knowledge. This definition covers all work in creative industries, including architecture, artistic crafts, and performing arts. The current employment conditions of these occupations and their future have long been debated. While approaching creative works from an interdisciplinary perspective, this session aims to delve into the emerging technological, political, and economic conditions and socio-political settings in which creative works are produced, the ways in which (if) those creative labourers (can) produce and maintain their works, whether they accumulate occupational social capital including the digital, their individual or collective ways of resistance, as well as how they feel about their work and how they see and narrate the current and future of their work, especially in relation to productive artificial intelligence. Through this framework, the overall objective of the panel is to contribute to critically engagements with the broader sociological transformations characterising contemporary creative works and the identification of sites, forms, and contents of resistance.
