Oral Presentation
This study explores intergenerational care dynamics in four-generation families in the Czech Republic, addressing a gap in the literature focused on three-generation families. It aims to understand the roles and interactions among great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, and children. Using a qualitative approach, the study examines two four-generation families through in-depth interviews and focus groups. Findings reveal that these families have adaptable caregiving dynamics, with great-grandparents providing emotional support, cultural transmission, and practical help, particularly during crises. This support significantly eases the caregiving burden on parents, especially mothers, and enhances familial bonds and children’s development. The research challenges the static view of the family, presenting it as a dynamic system with evolving roles and responsibilities. It highlights the importance of great-grandparents in intergenerational care and suggests that policies should recognize the contributions of all family members.
