The professional career of a woman in surgery is exclusive. On the one hand, gender asymmetry and the need for physical endurance are the basis for the reproduction of the gender stereotype of surgery as a “male profession”. Gender segregation continues to reproduce, which is expressed in the existence of a difference in the salaries of women and men, gender asymmetry in the managerial sphere, in the interaction of patients and doctors, career prospects, etc. On the other hand, the increasing precariatisation of medical work does not contribute to the improvement of the social well-being of doctors; there is an outflow of medical personnel, including those from surgical specializations. However, with an increase in the workload, the physical complexity of the profession, barriers to “entry” into the profession, and a negative perception by male colleagues, women master surgical specialties and work in the profession, demonstrating the exclusivity of professional careers. At the same time, it should be noted that there is a “request” for gender equality in modern society, new medical technologies are emerging that facilitate the physical work of a surgeon, the structure of child-parent relationships and the functional-role structure of the family, the structure of family responsibilities are changing, which can allow a woman to build professional career. With the use of gender optics, institutionally determined inequality between women and men, reproduced in the health care system, becomes obvious and acquires specific characteristics, determining the specificity of status consistency and gender display in surgery. The research project is aimed at a comprehensive study of the specifics of the professional career of a female surgeon in the changing reality of Russian society.
