Artificial Intelligence, Metaverse and Data Capitalism Beyond Territories

Thursday, 10 July 2025: 15:00-16:45
Location: FSE004 (Faculty of Education Sciences (FSE))
RC51 Sociocybernetics (host committee)

Language: English and Spanish

In this session, we aim to delve into the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), data capitalism, and the evolving metaverse, exploring their sociocybernetic implications beyond traditional territorial boundaries. The rapid advancement of AI technologies has transformed how data is commodified, raising critical questions about power, control, and societal impact. Our discussion will focus on the mechanisms through which AI-driven data capitalism perpetuates existing inequalities and generates new forms of digital 'unjustice'.

The concept of the metaverse introduces an additional layer of complexity, as virtual and augmented realities blur the lines between physical and digital spaces. This convergence challenges traditional sociological frameworks and necessitates a reconsideration of concepts such as identity, community, and governance. By integrating sociocybernetic perspectives, we aim to understand the dynamic feedback loops between human behavior and AI systems within these environments.

We will expect case studies and theoretical models that highlight the ways in which data capitalism in the metaverse can both reinforce and transcend geographic and cultural barriers. Our analysis will include discussions on digital surveillance, data privacy, and the ethical implications of AI in shaping social interactions and economic structures. Ultimately, this session seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of how AI and data capitalism, when intertwined with the metaverse, are redefining societal norms and challenging existing power dynamics across the globe.

Papers with a strong socio-cybernetic basis are especially welcome, but other perspectives are also welcome. Speculative and imaginative papers on possible future developments are solicited. The session will provide ample time for discussion.
