RC22 Sociology of Religion (host committee)

Language: English

This address by the RC-22 President, James Spickard explores the challenges posed to the sociology of religion by an increasingly interconnected and multicultural world.  These challenges are both conceptual and ethical.  How can our discipline grow beyond the Christian-based view of religion that typifies its past, to find concepts suitable for understanding religion in a post-colonial era? What role must sociologists of religion play in that world, in the face of violence, injustice, and the increased precariousness of truth-telling?

The session will include responses by two long-term members of the Research Committee, followed by audience discussion.
