Professions and the State

Saturday, 21 July 2018: 08:30-10:20
Location: 803B (MTCC SOUTH BUILDING)
RC52 Sociology of Professional Groups (host committee)

Language: English

The relationship between professions and states has been heavily debated in professions research and theorizing.  Empirical evidence suggests profession-state relations vary across time and place.   The state has traditionally been seen as a primary source of professional power; however, state actors appear to be redrawing professional regulation to reduce professional power, and transform profession-state relations.  Papers in this session will explore profession-state relations theoretically and/or empirically.  Papers exploring changes in professional regulation, deregulation, professional employment within and by the state, and other aspects of profession-state relations are welcome.  In keeping with the world congress theme, papers exploring profession-state relations from the perspectives of power and justice are particularly welcome.
