This session explores the multifaceted challenges facing cities in the Global South, characterized by rapid urbanization, environmental vulnerability, and socio-economic disparities. With a focus on the interplay between urban development and resilience strategies, the session aims to dissect the layers of exposure to climatic events, economic instability, and infrastructural deficits that these cities endure. Experts from various disciplines will converge to provide insights into how historical legacies, governance frameworks, and policy deficiencies amplify risks. The session will highlight innovative approaches to urban planning that incorporate risk mitigation and sustainable practices, emphasizing the need for inclusive and adaptive governance structures. Case studies from cities across the Global South will illustrate the practical challenges and successes in implementing these strategies. Through a combination of presentations, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, participants will engage with the latest research and collaborate on developing multidimensional solutions to enhance resilience and ensure sustainable urban futures in some of the world’s most dynamic yet vulnerable regions. This session not only seeks to raise awareness but also to foster a dialogue that bridges gaps between theory and practice in urban resilience planning.
