This session focuses on studies of the visual and performing arts as affordances for action. The session includes papers that continue explore the place of the arts in societies confronting challenges. connected with the theme of the arts in times of trouble. Presentations explore how creators, mediators or audiences have used the arts to engage in public discourse to confront inequalities or address cultural trauma. They study how the arts sometimes serve as affordances for social action, resistance or recovery and the ways in which competing value systems shape and have been shaped by the arts.
