How Socio-Cultural Contexts Shape Conceptions of Health, Medicine and Care (Part 2)

Tuesday, 8 July 2025: 11:00-12:45
Location: FSE030 (Faculty of Education Sciences (FSE))
RC15 Sociology of Health (host committee)

Language: English

As sociologists recognise, socio-cultural and historical contexts profoundly shape
conceptions of health and medicine and related behaviours. Contexts shape
individuals’ ‘definition of the situation’ and create opportunities for and constrain
action. This session includes papers that consider some of the many ways in which
contexts shape health-related views on and responses to prevention, testing,
diagnosis, treatment and/or care. In presenting work undertaken in different cultures,
communities, groups and institutional or organisational settings, the papers will
highlight the various ways in which context matters and the important contributions
that sociologists can make to our understanding of the factors that affect health and
the practices of medicine and care.
